Albany Ambassadors Program

Started in 2014, IPH’s Albany Ambassadors Program employs homeless or formerly homeless individuals as greeters at local theaters and events. Participants go through a formal application and interview process and develop critical skills while earning income and strengthening their resumes.

Being an Ambassador has opened up doors for individuals who have never had a job or haven’t worked in years. They are full of pride in their accomplishment and an example of hope, determination, and hard work for their peers.

Keybank is the proud sponsor of the Albany Ambassador Program.

Vernon proudly wore his Albany Ambassadors’ badge every day for weeks after he was accepted to the program. This was his first job in a while and he was excited to have been chosen.

The Ambassadors Program is giving individuals like Vernon experience in hospitality. Most participants have little to no job experience which makes even filling out a job application difficult. Now, these individuals have skills and confidence and are getting jobs in the community.

Inspired by the success of a similar program in Schenectady between Proctors Theater and the City Mission of Schenectady, the Albany Ambassador Program has partnered with Park Playhouse, Capital Repertory Theater, and Palace Theatre. Ambassadors greet patrons, provide directions, answer questions, and maintain a safe, clean, welcoming environment for theater-goers.

Participants go through a formal application and interview process and develop critical skills while earning income and strengthening their resumes.

They also have support throughout the process. Program Supervisor, Shahmeeka, takes the time to review tax forms, time sheets, and schedules. She helps set participants up to succeed, and that is exactly what is happening.

Several Ambassadors were offered new jobs because of this experience. Walter made a budget and saved his paychecks to buy new eyeglasses. After he reached that goal in September, he started saving for new winter clothes and boots.

The Ambassadors’ communication skills have improved and their interactions with other guests at The Drop-In Center have changed. They are leaders now; setting an example of hope, determination, and hard work for others.
