Code Blue Alert Issued

The Homeless and Travelers Aid Society (HATAS) has called a Code Blue alert effective January 4 through January 10.

Code Blue Albany is an outreach, transportation, and shelter protocol to engage, transport, and shelter homeless people in the City of Albany who might otherwise remain unsheltered during periods of extreme winter weather.  A Code Blue is called when the temperature is expected to be ten degrees of less and/or twelve inches of snow is expected. The wind chill is considered when determining whether or not to call a Code Blue.  HATAS is the Code Blue Coordinator.

The Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless (IPH) Safe Haven Shelter is one of the shelters serving as a Code Blue Shelter during alerts.  The Safe Haven Shelter operates every night, regardless of whether Code Blue is in effect.  The aim is to provide shelter for individuals who are literally homeless and have no other options for emergency shelter as a result of untreated mental illness, active addictions, couples who are not permitted to enter shelters, or shelter sanctions mandated by the Albany County Department of Social Services due to noncompliance with the Department’s requirements.  Located at 26 South Swan Street, the IPH Safe Haven Shelter has served 138 individuals with an average of 31 per night since its opening on November 17.

Additionally, the IPH Case Management Team has assisted 10 individuals enter the shelter system and 6 individuals find permanent housing.

As the IPH Safe Haven Shelter season continues, critical needs include:

  • New men’s boots sizes 8-13
  • Lightly used or new men’s and women’s winter coats
  • Ground coffee
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Disposable plates, cups, napkins, utensils, and pans
  • Meals dropped off for 35 individuals

All wish list items may be brought to the Albany Emergency Shelter at 176 Sheridan Avenue.  Questions may be directed to Eric at [email protected] or by calling 518-434-8021 x114.  Additionally, monetary donations can be made here.
